Credit Sesame and Identity Theft Council Bring Identity Theft Awareness to 100 Cities

Nationwide Consumer Security Campaign Aims to Educate Communities About Online Safety, the Threat of Identity Theft and Offers Free Resources to Protect Against Cybercrime

Mountain View, Calif. – January 28, 2015 – Credit Sesame and the nonprofit Identity Theft Council today announce the kickoff of the “100 Cities in 100 Days” initiative, a nationwide campaign focused on identity theft prevention and improving consumer security through education and encouraging simple steps consumers can take to limit cybercrime.

The 100 Cities in 100 Days campaign aims to receive commitment from 100 cities across the country to do at least one thing in their communities to help educate about and fight against identity theft and other online dangers, within 100 days. The Identity Theft Council is offering an array of support materials ranging from downloadable cybercrime prevention information packets to presentation packages that city leaders and officials can use to hold conferences or awareness meetings about the threat of cybercrime and identity theft.

Thirty five cities have already committed to participating in the program including San Francisco, CA, Chicago, IL, Los Angeles, CA, San Mateo County, CA and many more. “As an identity theft prosecutor, I see firsthand the devastation of the victims,” said Santa Clara Deputy District Attorney, Vishal Bathija. Bathija’s office has already committed to participating in 100 Cities in 100 Days. “Prevention is the only way to slow the emptied bank accounts and shattered families and it has to start, person by person, within our neighborhoods. Initiatives like ‘100 Cities’ are critical in getting the word out. I urge every community to come together and fight back against identity thieves: through education.”

“Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America, yet many people have little to no idea how it happens and how to protect themselves against it,” said Security and Identity Theft expert for Credit Sesame and Identity Theft Council Founder and CEO Neal O’Farrell. “With the 100 Cities in 100 Days initiative, we want to get more consumers involved in their own protection so they don’t join the estimated 45,000 victims impacted by this crime every single day.”

Credit Sesame is the only company that allows millions of consumers to access, monitor and manage their credit, view their credit score, improve their finances and protect their credit and identity, all in one place for free.

The 100 Cities in 100 Days campaign will run from January 28, 2015 through the end of April 2015. In addition to Credit Sesame, the initiative has support from Malwarebytes, Lookout, the Identity Theft Resource Center and many other organizations.

About 100 Cities in 100 Days

100 Cities in 100 Days is a unique approach to helping consumers, small business owners, and communities cope with the seemingly endless growth in identity theft, cybercrimes, data breaches, and Internet dangers. The goal of the campaign is to persuade local communities to come together and work with each other, led by local experts, to spread the “prevention through education” message about identity theft. The Identity Theft Council will work with cities throughout the country to provide support in educating communities about the threat of identity theft.

About Identity Theft Council

The non-profit Identity Theft Council was founded in 2010 on a simple premise – that every community, no matter how small, has resources that can be harnessed to combat identity theft: to help victims recover from the crime, to ease the burden on law enforcement, and to educate users about the many options they have to avoid the crime. The council aims to partner with law enforcement, security experts, and consumer groups to find more effective ways to support victims, train law enforcement, and educate the community. In 2011 the council was honored as the first non-profit to win the coveted SC Magazine Editor’s Choice Award.
